David Best DO, MS, ABAM Related Seminars and Products

Dr. Best graduated from the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2002.  He completed Family Medicine Residency in 2005 at Garden City Hospital.  In his final year of residency, he completed a course in office based opioid treatment and this began his work with treating patients with substance use disorder.  He has been providing this standard of care treatment for opioid use disorder patients in Northern Michigan since 2005.

Dr. Best started his post-graduate career at the Bellaire Family Health Center in Bellaire, MI where he worked from 2005-2012.  He has been in private practice since November 2012 and his office is in Traverse City.  He and his wife, Lindsay Best, DO, own Best Medical Services, which was certified as an Opioid Health Home in 2021.  Best Medical Services specializes in Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine.  Dr. Best is board certified in both Family Medicine and Addiction Medicine and has spoken on the topic of opioid use disorder on a local, state-wide and national level.

Dr. Best was on the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians (MAOFP) board from 2007-2015.  He served as President of the MAOFP from 2013-2014.  He has been on the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) board since 2014 and was MOA President from May 2021-2022.  He also served as President of the Northern Michigan Osteopathic Association from June 2015-June 2017.  He has been a trustee for the Des Moines University Alumni board since June 2022 and has been a trustee with the Novello Health Provider Organization since December 2022.

Prior to and during medical school, I worked as an RN in the Emergency and Critical Care settings. My passion and why I will be speaking at the Spring MOA lies in nutrition, wellness, and health. For me, wellness has always related to the health of our environment and, more specifically, to that of our soils. I completed a Master’s in Biology at Northern Michigan University where I studied the relationships between soil health and human health with a focus on the microbiome. During this time, I also spent several years working on a local organic farm. I am excited to share some of what I’ve learned thus far in hopes we all can grow ourselves and our patients healthier and stronger together. I hope to further my career in functional, integrative, and osteopathic manipulative medicine built from the foundation of a family medicine perspective.

I am board certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Infectious Diseases and have taken care of HIV patients for over 30 years. I have also taken care of hepatitis C patients for 20 years. I am a professor at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and I have developed courses in HIV and hepatitis. I teach medicine residents as well as ID fellows on HIV and hepatitis C at my clinical sites.

I am currently the Director of HIV/Hepatitis clinics at three sites:

2. Central Michigan Department of Community Health

Joel Kahn MD, FACC Related Seminars and Products

Joel Kahn, MD, FACC of Detroit, Michigan, is a practicing cardiologist, and a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine.  He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Michigan Medical School. Everett Kalcec is currently Core Faculty for the Family Medicine Residency at McLaren Bay Region Hospital in Bay City, Michigan. Prior to this, he was practicing with the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Mary Megally completed her medical education at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her neurology residency at Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital. Upon graduation, she joined Henry Ford as a senior staff Neurologist. She completed her headache UCNS Certification in 2022. She is now a part of the Headache and Facial Pain Division at Henry Ford. Carol L. Monson, DO., MS. received her Master’s Degree in Community Mental Health from Northern Illinois University. After serving as an inpatient and outpatient psychotherapist in Illinois and Michigan, she entered MSUCOM to become an osteopathic physician.  Dr. Monson completed her post graduate training at Lansing General and Ingham Medical Hospitals and founded a solo practice in family medicine and obstetrics. After joining the faculty of MSUCOM in 1988 as family medicine residency training supervisor, she served as one of the original members of the Family Medicine Professional Advisory Committee of COGMET ?later the State Wide Campus System.  Dr Monson served as the Residency Director of the MSUCOM Family Medicine Residency from 1994-1997.  In conjunction with Robert Ward DO, she co-founded the FM-OMM plus one Residency Training Program leading to dual certification of ACOFP and AAO.  After becoming chairperson of the MSUCOM Department of Family and Community Medicine in 2005 until 2012, she then served as a Senior Advisor to the MSUCOM Dean until January of 2019.

Virginia Skiba, M.D. received her Medical Doctor degree in 2004 when she graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School.  She spent the next 9 years of her career serving in the US Navy, when she worked as a primary care provider and later as a neurologist. In 2014, Dr. Skiba completed a sleep medicine fellowship at the University of Michigan. 

Currently, she works at the Henry Ford Sleep Disorders and Research Center in Southeast Michigan. She is the Associate Medical Director of the Henry Ford Medical Group sleep labs and Section Head of the Sterling Heights clinic.  Dr. Skiba in active in the Michigan Academy of Sleep Medicine where she served as President in 2020, led several annual conferences, and is currently collaborating with other groups on ending early school start times in Michigan. Barbara Zajdel DO Related Seminars and Products

After graduating with a Bachelors degree from Michigan State University in 1995, Barbara Zajdel attended the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.  She completed her Doctor of Osteopathy in 1999 and returned to Michigan for her internship and Family Medicine residency at Garden City Hospital.
