Carol Monson DO, MS


Carol L. Monson, DO., MS. received her Master’s Degree in Community Mental Health from Northern Illinois University. After serving as an inpatient and outpatient psychotherapist in Illinois and Michigan, she entered MSUCOM to become an osteopathic physician.  Dr. Monson completed her post graduate training at Lansing General and Ingham Medical Hospitals and founded a solo practice in family medicine and obstetrics. After joining the faculty of MSUCOM in 1988 as family medicine residency training supervisor, she served as one of the original members of the Family Medicine Professional Advisory Committee of COGMET ?later the State Wide Campus System.  Dr Monson served as the Residency Director of the MSUCOM Family Medicine Residency from 1994-1997.  In conjunction with Robert Ward DO, she co-founded the FM-OMM plus one Residency Training Program leading to dual certification of ACOFP and AAO.  After becoming chairperson of the MSUCOM Department of Family and Community Medicine in 2005 until 2012, she then served as a Senior Advisor to the MSUCOM Dean until January of 2019.

Dr. Monson served as the first woman president of the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Practitioners in 1996, president of the Michigan Osteopathic Association President in 2002, and served twelve years as a Trustee of the American Osteopathic Association.  She also served three years as president of the Michigan Osteopathic College Foundation and four years as president of the Michigan Council on Graduate Medical Education.  After receiving fellowship status in the American College of Osteopathic Family Practice and the American Academy of Family Practice, she received the prestigious MSUCOM Patenge Medal in 2003 for her community service.  Dr. Monson was the Principal Investigator of MSUCOM’s Health Resources and Services Administration Grant to establish geriatric fellowships across Michigan to current writing of a book titled,  Aging Optimally, Healing the Wounds of Body, Mind and Spirit.
