Graham Atkin is an associate professor with the departments of Radiology and Neurology at Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine.  He received his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Michigan where he studied Alzheimer’s Disease.  He has worked with marginalized populations for over two decades in Detroit, New York City, and Lansing. He is one of the faculty advisors for Spartan Street Medicine as well as teaching undergraduates, MD and DO students, and neurology residents at Sparrow Hospital.  He also teaches Shakespeare at the University of Michigan.

Francis Komara, D.O., FACOFP, a Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine alumna, has built a distinguished career in educating medical students, residents and fellows, providing patients with outstanding clinical care and furthering the osteopathic profession through research and service. Dr. Komara has served the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine in several capacities for 20 years, including course coordinator for more than a dozen geriatric courses, associate director of Continuing Education and Faculty of the Geriatric Education Center of Michigan, program director for the Family Practice Geriatric Medicine Residency Program and the Osteopathic Geriatric Family Medicine Residency Program, and professor for the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Geriatrics.  Previously he was faculty at Nova Southeastern College of Osteopathic Medicine, the University of Southern California School of Medicine and Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center.

 

A member of the American Osteopathic Association, Michigan Osteopathic Association and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, Dr. Komara is a past president of the Ingham County Osteopathic Association. He has been a member of the American Geriatrics Society, Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians, and the American Medical Directors Association. Frank has lectured on geriatric medicine for professional and community organizations in Florida, California and Michigan.

 

He retired in July 2019 and was conferred the title of Professor Health Programs Emeritus by Michigan State University.  In retirement, he plans to devote more time to his wife of 45 years, Pam, his daughter Lauren and son Steve, their families, especially granddaughters Miranda, Audrey and Emma and be the best grampa ever.  Additionally, he plans to read some non-medical books, fish, travel in his trailer, cook and grow some tomatoes.

Dr. Ryan graduated from Michigan State University’s Medical Scientist Training Program in 1994 with both her PhD in Microbiology and her Doctorate in Osteopathy.  She then became certified in Family Medicine and practiced in rural Michigan.  During her years of rural Family Practice Dr. Ryan also developed a practice in Complementary Medicine.  After 16 years in rural Michigan, Dr. Ryan returned to East Lansing and MSU.  From 2011 through 2014, she provided primary care at the MSU Student Health Center.  In 2013, Dr. Ryan joined the Physician Peer Education Project on Immunization, a collaborative effort among the CDC, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and the MSU Extension Service.  As a presenter for the project, she provides updates on vaccine preventable diseases to medical providers throughout Michigan.  Having recently retired from primary care, Dr. Ryan currently devotes her time to the Peer Education Project and to her Complementary Medicine Practice in Okemos, MI.

Dr. Walter Willett is a physician and epidemiologist and Professor of Epidemiology and Nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He served as Chair of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard for 25 years. Much of his work has been on the development of methods, using both questionnaire and biochemical approaches, to study the effects of diet on the occurrence of major diseases. He has applied these methods starting in 1980 in the Nurses’ Health Studies I and II and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. Together, these cohorts that include nearly 300,000 men and women with repeated dietary assessments are providing the most detailed information on the long-term health consequences of food choices. Dr. Willett has published over 2,000 research papers, primarily on lifestyle risk factors for heart disease and cancer, and has written the textbook, Nutritional Epidemiology, published by Oxford University Press. He also has four books for the general public. Dr. Willett is the most cited nutritional scientist internationally. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the recipient of many national and international awards for his research.

Dr. Rose is founder and Program Director of “the Joy Initiative,” a project she started at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and College of Osteopathic Medicine schools. In 2013, she was awarded the SAMHSA American Psychiatric Association Minority Leadership Fellowship Grant, from which she built the foundation to develop emotional resilience, happiness, and mindfulness trainings tailored to meet the unique needs of medical providers. She now offers one of the first formal classes on happiness and joy in medical schools in the nation--which she has been teaching as a for-credit class in two medical schools for the past eight years. This curriculum has since expanded to provide training for peak performance for team coaches, trainers and student athletes.
Most recently, Dr. Rose received an award as one of the top medical educators in the country, the National American Osteopathic Medical Educator Fellowship Teaching award, which is a five-year fellowship.
Prior to entering medical school, Dr. Rose worked as a Program Officer, fundraiser, and advocate for the underserved with a focus on overcoming domestic violence and trauma. She has over 25 years of experience and formal training in life coaching. Drawing upon her experiences with underserved communities, she now creates and facilitates happiness training programs for medical providers and trainees across the country.

Dr. Traci Dantzler is the Past President of the Genesee District Dental Society, where she served on the board of directors for eight years. She served as a volunteer in organized dentistry in various capacities over the years, including Delegate to the Michigan Dental Association House of Delegates, Secretary of the Genesee District Dental Society, Chair of the Ethics Committee, President-elect, and ultimately, President. 

Dr. Dantzler is a native of Flint, Michigan. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at Northwestern University Dental School in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Dantzler also received a certificate in Counselor Training from Beecher Institute, a Bible school founded by Mt Zion Church in Clarkston, Michigan.

Dr. Dantzler is a member of the American Dental Association, the Michigan Dental Association and the Genesee District Dental Society. She is a Fellow of  the International College of Dentists, and the American College of Dentists.

Dr. Dantzler participated in several television interviews, and authored, or contributed to, articles in local, state, and national publications. Her focus has been the importance of oral health,  the connection between oral health and overall health, and the necessity for everyone to establish a dental home. Dr. Dantzler’s outreach has been an effort to bridge the gap between society and dentistry.

Over the past several years, Dr. Dantzler has met with various legislators to discuss issues such as mobile dentistry, community water fluoridation, and access to care, to name a few.

The goal of many of Dr. Dantzler’s outreach efforts has also been to bring local, state, and national attention to the dental needs of the Flint community-particularly as they pertain to the Flint water crisis. Dr. Dantzler has met twice with the Surgeon General of the United States-Dr. Vivek H. Murthy-to discuss the impact of the Flint water crisis on the dental health of the Flint community. 

Dr. Dantzler retired from the practice of dentistry in 2019, and is currently working as a dental consultant for Delta Dental of Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.

Dr. Scott Russo is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Natural Science and Wayne State University School of Medicine.  He completed Residency training at Grand Rapids Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program and a Spine Fellowship at Southern Illinois University school of Medicine. 
 
Dr. Russo specializes in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of spinal disorders and orthopaedic fracture care. He is accomplished in all areas of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spinal surgeries, including trauma, tumors, degenerative conditions, scoliosis and herniated discs. His subspecialty of interest is in the non-surgical and surgical care of adult scoliosis and kyphosis. 
 
Dr. Russo's academic activities include being an invited lecturer with the Grand Valley State University Physical Therapy program as well as being a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at both Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and College of Human Medicine.   Additionally, Dr. Russo is a member of the Executive Committee for the Spectrum Health/MSU Orthopaedic Residency Program. 
 
Dr. Russo has served as the past Chairman of Orthopaedics at Spectrum Health and Trinity Health St. Mary’s Hospitals.  He is a current member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, North American Spine Society, Scoliosis Research Society, American Spinal Injury Association, and Michigan State Medical Society.

I am board certified in Internal Medicine, Medical Oncology, and Infectious Diseases and have taken care of HIV patients for over 30 years. I have also taken care of hepatitis C patients for 20 years. I am a professor at the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and I have developed courses in HIV and hepatitis. I teach medicine residents as well as ID fellows on HIV and hepatitis C at my clinical sites.

I am currently the Director of HIV/Hepatitis clinics at three sites:

  1. Ingham County Health Department
  2. Central Michigan Department of Community Health
  3. Great Lakes Community Health Clinics

All three sites are FQHC sponsored clinics, and all are funded by Ryan White for HIV Care. I am currently taking care of over 1000 HIV patients and over 500 Hepatitis C and B patients.

I am the Director of the HIV Registry at Michigan State University. The registry has data on over 600 HIV patients and we are currently doing translational research at MSU, which have been NIH sponsored grants.

Michael Valitutto D.O. is the Medical Director of the Borgess Diabetes and Endocrine Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  He has been instrumental in the development of both in-patient and out-patient protocols at Borgess Medical Center.  He was the clinical leader for the acquisition of NCQA (National Committee for Quality Assurance) Recognition for a Diabetes Center of Excellence and all of Borgess Medical Center.  He is actively involved as the Principal Investigator within the Borgess Research Institute in numerous research studies in Diabetes.  He is the Lead Physician for Diabetes Care Management at Borgess Medical Center and is involved in designing health care strategies for over 8,000 patients with Diabetes.  He has developed and initiated a Diabetes Transition Service Linking Inpatient and Outpatient Diabetes Care.
In addition, he runs a weight management program.  He offers a range of medical interventions to promote prevention, treatment, & manage obesity including exercise physiology, medical nutrition therapy, medical weight loss therapies and supervises the medical management side of Bariatric intervention.  
Clinical expertise includes obesity management, difficult to treat blood pressure, lipid disorders and thyroid disease.

Ramona Wallace D.O. IFMCP, is an Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at WMED. Currently in Battle Creek teaching in the Family Medicine Residency Program. She became Certified in Functional Medicine in 2018. Since then she has piloted a Functional Medicine Residency track. Prior to coming to Battle Creek, she worked in Muskegon at a FQHC and developed various programs to address the disparities in care, focusing on nutritional insecurity as well as building community resilience. Her current focus of research is to develop a nutritional deficiency data base.
